UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
Philosophy and Objective of the Programme
The objectives of this programme have been;
i.    To give undergraduate students firm academic foundation in the basic principles of civil engineering.
ii.    To introduce them to recent developments in relevant areas of Civil Engineering, and
iii.    To equip them to meet the challenges of professional engineering employment in Nigeria in particular and the world at large.
The philosophy behind this programme takes cognizance of the fact that for a developing country, the graduate engineer is likely to face all possible engineering problems, many outside his specialty, the programme is therefore broad based so as to give a mechanical or civil engineer for example the basic principles and methods of electrical and mechanical engineering. Thus, the emphasis in first two years of the programme is on common basics covering all departments of the Faculty of Engineering.

The programme ultimately provides would-be graduate civil engineers with basic knowledge in the fields of structures, hydraulics, soil mechanics and foundations, transportation, public health engineering and materials. Graduates of this programme can find employment in the design and construction industries including highways, government establishment, research organizations, water supply corporations, ports and harbours. Postgraduate programmes are offered in four areas of specialization namely, structures, materials and construction, water resources/public health engineering and soil mechanics and foundation.

POSTGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES
BACKGROUND
Postgraduate studies cover the following areas of specialization: Structural Engineering, Water Resources engineering, Construction Management, Soil Mechanics and Foundation, Highway Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. The programmes for these courses are planned in two phases. The first phase consists of lectures, field trips and laboratory work while the second phase involves guiding the students in techniques of research for the preparation of thesis, reports or dissertation on particular topics of their choice. The programmes provide the student with information on current practice and recent advances in the various areas of specialization. Research topics are based on relevance to the needs of the society and the need to advance the frontier of knowledge. The Department of Civil Engineering offers graduate courses leading to the award of PGDCE, M.Sc., M.Eng. and Ph.D  degrees in various areas of specialization. This prospectus was prepared to provide vital information for all prospective candidates and already admitted students of the Department of Civil Engineering. The areas of specialization include; Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, Construction management, Highway Engineering, Construction materials, Soil Mechanics and Foundation.
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF PROGRAMME
The postgraduate programme in Civil Engineering is designed to meet the need of the government and private consulting and construction firms in specialized and advanced areas within the Civil Engineering discipline. Furthermore, the staff of the department recognize the prime role civil engineering at postgraduate level can play in modern and future technological development of our country. A survey of fields of interest shows that postgraduate courses in Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, Social Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Structural Engineering, Highway Engineering, Materials and Construction appear to be in great demand. These courses are fashioned to produce graduates who are competent enough to face challenging civil engineering problems of the developing countries.
Postgraduate programme in civil engineering is aimed at:
i)    Training personnel in advanced and specialized fields; and
ii)    Meeting the need of specialists in various fields of civil engineering both in the public and private sectors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering (PGDCE)
Candidates must possess third class bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or in any other field of Engineering. Candidates with at least second class bachelor degree in related fields of science are also eligible for Postgraduate Diploma. Students admitted into PGDCE programme will take all the fourth year and final year undergraduate courses. He or she must satisfy 75% class attendance to qualify for examination.
M.Sc. and M.Eng.
Applicants must possess (i) at least a merit level (above 3.5 grade point average) in postgraduate diploma in Civil Engineering or (ii) at least a second class honours degree or an equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or in any other field of Engineering to qualify for admission into the M.Eng. programme. Candidates for M.Sc. are normally those with B.Sc. in a related science discipline.
Ph.D.
Candidates must possess M.Sc. or M.Eng with an average grade point of not less than 3.5 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Applicants who already possess a masters degree at the same level of pass from recognized institutions may be considered for entry to the Ph.D. programme.
